Created a cybersecurity education app based on Duolingo for my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Fun and Engaging Way to Learn Cybersecurity

Greetings, fellow knowledge seekers!

I am excited to share with you the launch of my new iOS application, SecureMind, designed specifically to educate users on the fundamentals of cybersecurity in an engaging and interactive manner. Inspired by the successful teaching methods of Duolingo, this app was developed as part of my master’s thesis, where I explore how mobile microlearning can effectively motivate individuals to enhance their cybersecurity awareness.

What Makes SecureMind Unique?

At the core of SecureMind is its user-centric design, which allows individuals to track their progress and see their growth in understanding cybersecurity concepts. Each chapter begins with an assessment of what users already know, followed by comprehensive training segmented into easily digestible sections. After completing these sections, users are tested to gauge their improvement, making the learning process both reflective and rewarding.

Dynamic Learning Features

One of the standout features of SecureMind is its library that expands over time. After finishing the first chapter, users unlock a collection of previously covered topics, which increases with each new chapter completed. This mechanism aids in long-term retention of cybersecurity principles, ensuring that users have access to essential information at all times. Additionally, I regularly update the app with brief cybersecurity news articles to keep learners informed about current events in the field.

Gamification for Enhanced Engagement

Acknowledging that traditional video courses can often be tedious, I have integrated two primary gamification elements to make learning enjoyable and rewarding. The Security IQ system allows users to earn points for engaging with the material, utilizing the library, and staying updated with the latest news. As users accumulate points, they see their IQ rise, but staying active is crucial as inactivity can lead to a decrease in their score.

In addition, users can collect coins that can be spent customizing the app with unique icons and personal titles for notifications, adding a layer of personalization that enriches the experience.

Content You Can Trust

Creating reliable content is paramount, so I based the app’s curriculum on standards set by the Digital Führerschein (DiFü), a program supported by the German government. The content has also been reviewed by my academic supervisor for accuracy and effectiveness, ensuring that users receive trustworthy information.

I invite you to try out SecureMind and help spread the word! Your feedback would be invaluable to my research on the effectiveness of mobile microlearning in cybersecurity education.
