Troubleshooting SSD Data Recovery: What to Do When Your Drive Disappears

Hello everyone,

I recently faced a frustrating situation with my aging computer that combines two hard drives: a SanDisk SSD (SDSSDA-240G) for running Windows 10 and a traditional mechanical hard drive for storing data.

While browsing the internet, my system experienced an unexpected reboot, reminiscent of a brief power outage. After this incident, I discovered that my SSD was no longer recognized in the BIOS—a worrisome development, especially given that the BIOS was taking an unusually long time to load.

In an attempt to salvage what I could, I connected the SSD to an Icy Box enclosure designed for external drives. Unfortunately, my other computer displayed a message indicating a “problem with the USB device,” and the SSD didn’t appear in the disk management utility either.

With these complications in mind, I’m seeking effective DIY solutions to recover my data. Has anyone encountered a similar issue or found successful methods to retrieve data from a non-detecting SSD? Your insights and experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your assistance!

  1. Hi there,

It appears you’re experiencing a common issue where your SSD is not recognized by the BIOS, which can sometimes indicate a hardware failure or connection problem. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially recover your data:

    • Check Physical Connections: Ensure that the SSD’s SATA and power cables are securely connected. If possible, try using different cables or connecting to a different SATA port on your motherboard to rule out port or cable issues.
    • Test in Another System: If available, connect the SSD to another computer directly via SATA (not just external enclosure) to verify if it’s recognized.
    • Use a Bootable Diagnostic Tool: Create a bootable USB with tools like Ubuntu Live or specialized recovery tools such as TestDisk or EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. These can help detect and clone the drive even if it’s not recognized in BIOS.
    • Check the SSD Firmware and Firmware Update: Visit SanDisk’s official website to see if there’s any firmware update
