Simplifying Home Automation After a Loss: A Family Journey

Today, I find myself navigating a challenging yet pivotal task after the unexpected passing of my father just a month ago. As someone deeply immersed in the world of home automation, he transformed our house into a tech haven, primarily using Raspberry Pi devices in pursuit of complete security and functionality. Unfortunately, this intricate setup has left us, particularly my mother, with a home automation labyrinth that is beyond our grasp.
The Current Situation
Our home features an extensive network of 36 Ethernet ports scattered throughout various rooms, all fed from a central router positioned in the server room. It’s essential to navigate this bewildering setup, which has been wired to accommodate various systems including satellite TV, phone lines, and ceiling speakers—all in one cluttered space.
At the heart of this setup is a network distribution unit (often referred to informally as the “rack thing”) that houses the 36 Ethernet ports. Each port is connected via Ethernet cables from a switch, linking wall sockets in each room to the internet, which sounds straightforward enough—but it is anything but for those of us unfamiliar with this realm.
The Challenges Ahead
My primary objective is to streamline this convoluted system, making it not only more functional but also presentable enough for my mother to sell the house without deterring potential buyers. The daunting idea is to replace the existing complicated wiring with a single, efficient switch that can manage all Ethernet connections seamlessly.
