In an alarming discovery, I recently encountered a publicly accessible webcam stream from a child’s bedroom while browsing Shodan—a search engine specifically designed to find Internet-connected devices and security vulnerabilities. Alarmed at the potential privacy breach, I recognized the urgency to take action and help protect the child involved.
Reaching Out for Help
Knowing that the webcam owner appears to be a customer of Rogers Communications in Canada, I decided to reach out to their customer service for guidance on addressing this troubling situation. However, my experience with their support was less than satisfactory. After more than thirty minutes of discussion, I was directed to a supervisor who ultimately told me that I needed to contact either Austrian authorities (I am based in Austria) or Canadian law enforcement, as they could not address the issue directly.
This left me feeling frustrated and helpless. At no point could I shake the feeling that the owner of the webcam was likely unaware that their device was broadcasting sensitive information for anyone to see, which raised significant concerns as a parent.
Seeking Assistance from the Community
Motivated to resolve the issue, I decided to escalate the situation through various channels. I reached out to multiple organizations including the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security to highlight this glaring privacy breach. I also attempted to contact Canadian authorities directly, but experienced challenges in getting through to the appropriate contact.
In an unexpected update, I received confirmation from Rogers that my concern had been escalated, and they would be following up with the webcam owner to secure the stream. Additionally, a few hours later, I found out that the video feed has since been secured with a password—something I hope ensures the privacy of the family involved.
