Discovering My Dad’s Old Portable Computer During a Shed Cleanup

Unearthing a Technological Relic: The Sharp PC-7000

During a recent shed clean-up, I stumbled upon a fascinating piece of my family’s history: my father’s portable computer, the Sharp PC-7000. This vintage device, which I’ve only captured once in a rather nostalgic photograph of it resting on my lap, has remained snugly tucked away outside, safeguarded from the dust and cobwebs of the shed—primarily due to the resident spiders.

To my surprise, after plugging it in, the computer came back to life! It’s remarkable to think that we still have floppy disks compatible with this relic. The Sharp PC-7000 was undoubtedly an impressive feat of technology back in its heyday, serving as a trusty companion for my dad during his classes.

Rediscovering this piece of tech has sparked memories and curiosity about the era it represented—an era where portable computing was just beginning to make its mark. It’s incredible how far we’ve come since then, yet finding this little time capsule reminds me of the roots of today’s sophisticated devices.

While it may not be practical to use this machine today, it serves as a wonderful reminder of innovations that once defined the landscape of technology.
