The Illusion of Cybersecurity: A Personal Perspective from the IT Trenches

In today’s digital landscape, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. It is a topic that has garnered significant attention and concern, especially in the wake of high-profile data breaches and cyber attacks. However, as someone who has spent nearly a decade in the IT field, I can’t help but feel that the commitment to cybersecurity at many organizations is more of a facade than a reality.

Throughout my career, I have had the opportunity to work with various companies, none of which belong to the Fortune 500 realm. Despite this experience, I have encountered a recurring theme: while organizations often claim to prioritize security, their actions suggest otherwise. My immediate superior, the IT director, lacks traditional expertise in security matters yet holds significant decision-making power.
