The Illusion of Cybersecurity: A Personal Reflection on Industry Practices

In an era where data breaches and cyber threats are increasingly prevalent, one might assume that companies prioritize cybersecurity. However, from my decade-long experience in the IT sector, particularly with smaller organizations outside of the Fortune 500, I’ve encountered a disconcerting trend: a significant number of companies may not genuinely prioritize their cybersecurity measures.

Having worked across various roles, I have first-hand knowledge of instances where the importance of security seems to be more of a façade than a true commitment. Take my current position, for instance. Although I hold a role that ostensibly addresses security needs, it’s evident that I’m more of a formality—essentially a checkbox fulfilling insurance requirements—rather than a pivotal player in shaping a robust security posture.

Surprisingly, while my workload remains relatively light and my salary may feel disproportionately high for the tasks I undertake, I find myself underwhelmed by the lack of proactive engagement in cybersecurity initiatives. Despite presenting various strategies aimed at enhancing our security framework, my efforts appear to go unnoticed, leaving me questioning the organization’s genuine commitment to safeguarding its digital assets.
