Troubleshooting Persistent Application Crashes and Blue Screen Errors on My New Build

When I assembled my custom PC just a couple of months ago, it was with the excitement of exploring new gaming and productivity possibilities. However, I’ve encountered a frustrating issue: every application, whether it’s my web browser, games, or work-related software, is prone to crashes. Some applications crash frequently, while others do so sporadically.

Despite exhausting a wide range of troubleshooting methods, I have yet to find a solution to this persistent problem. Here’s a rundown of the measures I’ve taken:

  • Reinstalled Windows: A fresh operating system should help eliminate software-related issues.
  • Updated Drivers: Ensuring all drivers are current is critical for optimal performance.
  • Updated BIOS: I thought an upgrade to the BIOS might resolve compatibility issues.
  • Downclocked CPU and GPU: Lowering the clock speeds was an attempt to reduce thermal strain.
  • Reapplied Thermal Paste: Proper thermal management is essential, so I ensured the paste was correctly applied.

In addition to application crashes, my system has bluescreened on multiple occasions. The frequency varies; sometimes I experience it several times a day, while other weeks may only bring one incident.

Currently, I suspect that my processor might be defective, so I have reached out to Intel for support. While I await their response, I am keen on gathering insights that could help me resolve this issue.

Here are my PC specifications for your reference:
GPU: RTX 4090
CPU: Intel i9-14900K
RAM: 192 GB
Power Supply: 1600W

If anyone has encountered similar problems or has suggestions on what I should try next, I would greatly appreciate your input. I’ve also experimented with various BIOS settings in hopes of finding a resolution, but without success.

Interestingly, I don’t recall these issues being so prevalent when I first built the machine, but they have intensified over the past few weeks. Thank you in advance for any advice or insights you can provide!

  1. Thank you for providing detailed information about your troubleshooting efforts. Persistent application crashes and blue screen errors can be caused by a variety of hardware or software issues, especially in a new build. Here are some additional steps you might consider:

    • Run Hardware Diagnostics: Use tools like MemTest86 to thoroughly test your RAM for faults, and Prime95 or Intel Diagnostic Tool for CPU stability. Given your large RAM capacity, testing each module individually can help identify defective sticks.
    • Check Storage Devices: Use SSD/HDD diagnostic tools such as CrystalDiskInfo or manufacturer-specific utilities to verify storage health, as bad sectors can cause crashes and blue screens.
    • Analyze Minidump Files: The blue screen should generate crash dump files located in C:\Windows\Minidump. Analyzing these with BlueScreenView or WinDbg can help pinpoint specific driver or hardware issues.
    • Reset BIOS Settings: Since you’ve experimented with BIOS configurations, consider resetting BIOS to default settings and then applying only necessary configurations, such as enabling XMP profiles for RAM, if applicable.
