Troubleshooting Network Issues on a New PC Built from Facebook Marketplace Find
Recently, I acquired a new desktop PC via Facebook Marketplace at an attractive price point. Upon setting up, I conducted speed tests and encountered a peculiar issue: while download speeds appear decent on paper, certain gaming platforms and services are unable to download game content, reporting zero bandwidth.
Speed Test Results
- Download speeds:
- First test: approximately 330.99 Mbps
- Second test: around 195.88 Mbps
-
Third test: about 193.51 Mbps
-
Upload speeds:
- First test: 111.00 Mbps
- Second test: 93.07 Mbps
-
Third test: 95.42 Mbps
-
Latency:
- Consistent ping of 14ms across tests
Despite these impressive figures, specific applications fail to download content:
- Xbox game downloads are stuck at 0 Bps.
- EA Games client reports a download speed of 0 Mbps.
- Steam begins to download at approximately 1.5 Mbps but soon drops to 0 Bps.
System Specifications
The PC hardware setup is as follows:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5600X
- RAM: G.Skill 16GB DDR5
- Storage:
- C: drive – NVMe 512GB Klevv SSD
- D: drive – 4TB Silicon Power NVMe SSD (previously used)
- Motherboard: ASUS B650M Prime AX II
Currently, I am utilizing the motherboard’s Wi-Fi antenna for network connectivity. Additionally, I’ve tested alternative internet sources, including a T-Mobile wireless hotspot and a wired hotspot via a Galaxy S24+ device.
Interestingly, my Steam Deck on the same network downloads games without issue, indicating that the network connection itself is generally capable.
Troubleshooting Attempts
- Tried downloading to both the C: and D: drives.
- Verified that all other network functions are operational; I can browse the internet, stream, and perform other online tasks successfully.
- The PC is functioning normally, and I am able to post this message from it.
Current Challenges
- Steam refuses to let me restore game backups or select existing game folders on the D: drive.
- Game clients and platforms recognize the network connection but can’t download content properly.
