Reviving a Vintage Laptop for My Child: Setting Up Ubuntu for Learning

In an exciting endeavor, I recently breathed new life into a 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu. This refurbished device is set to be a perfect first laptop for my four-year-old daughter, providing her a platform to learn essential skills like typing and writing.

As I embark on this journey, I’m exploring the best ways to simplify the user experience for her. One key feature I’m hoping to implement is the ability for the laptop to open directly into a text editor. This would allow her to focus on her writing without having to navigate the complexities of using a mouse just yet, making her first experiences with technology as intuitive as possible.

Additionally, I have a couple of technical questions that could enhance her experience. First, is there a way to set up the laptop so that it starts with the Caps Lock key activated? This small adjustment could make typing uppercase letters much easier for her.

I’m looking forward to sharing this journey and any helpful tips I glean along the way, especially for other parents eager to introduce their young ones to the world of computing. Stay tuned!
