Troubleshooting a Damaged Western Digital Blue HDD: Seeking Insights

In a follow-up to a previous discussion, I want to share my experience with a damaged Western Digital Blue hard drive (model WD30EZRZ, 3TB, manufactured in 2018) that has sustained damage due to a power spike from a faulty power supply. After several months of research and deliberation, I’ve decided to seek further insights from the community regarding potential solutions.

Upon examining the drive, I discovered that the circuit board has a visibly damaged component, which I suspect to be a fuse, as denoted by the “S” marking. I have a modest background in electronics, and after running some diagnostics with my multimeter, I’ve confirmed that this particular component shows no conductivity in either direction. For reference purposes, it appears to share a similar placement in the circuit with the 0-ohm resistors labeled “000” found on an older Western Digital control board I have on hand.

While reviewing relevant discussions, I’ve noted a lack of documentation on surface-mount resistors marked with an “S.” To assist in the troubleshooting process, I’ve attached photographs highlighting the problematic component, which I’ve circled in red. In contrast, the component I’ve circled in blue conducts electricity in both directions but shows a very low resistance, suggesting it is functional. The other diodes present on the board seem to be operating as expected.

For testing, I’m utilizing an IBM/Fluke 8060 A/AA multimeter, and I also have access to a PACE Thermo-Tweez system for surface-mount device work. I’m prepared to replace the damaged component once I can definitively identify its specifications.

If anyone has insights or experience with similar issues regarding Western Digital drives, I would greatly appreciate your input. Your expertise could prove invaluable in determining the right approach to resolving this issue and potentially salvaging the drive. Thank you in advance for your guidance!
