Navigating a New Business Responsibility: Managing a Website After Inheriting a Company
Taking over a small business can be both a daunting and exciting experience, especially when you’ve unexpectedly inherited it from a mentor or loved one. Recently, a situation arose where I found myself in this exact circumstance after the passing of my boss. Along with the responsibilities of running the company, I’ve encountered a significant challenge: accessing and managing its website.
As I dive into this new role, I have some login credentials, but my technological expertise is rather limited. My initial task involves pinpointing the platform on which the website is built. Without a clear understanding of this, making necessary edits or updates feels like embarking on a treasure hunt blindfolded.
To further complicate matters, I attempted to use various online tools designed to identify the content management systems (CMS) used by websites. Unfortunately, these efforts yielded no results. Visually, the site is far from appealing, leading me to suspect that my boss may have crafted it using raw HTML rather than employing user-friendly platforms such as WordPress or Wix.
On a brighter note, I do have a foundational grasp of HTML. However, the challenge now lies in figuring out how to access the editing interface. When using a platform like Wix, the process is straightforward: you simply log in on their website and manage your content from there. Yet, I find myself unsure of where to use the login information I possess to modify this website that my boss created.
In this blog post, I aim to share my journey and seek guidance on how to navigate this situation effectively. For anyone who finds themselves in a similar plight, the steps I take might help illuminate the path toward managing a website when faced with limited technical knowledge after a sudden transition in business leadership.
If you have any suggestions or experiences to share regarding accessing and managing a company website, your insights would be invaluable. Let’s unravel this complex web of digital management together!
