For my master’s thesis, I created a cybersecurity education application inspired by Duolingo

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Learning Cybersecurity

Greetings, readers!

I am excited to share my latest project: an innovative iOS application named SecureMind. Developed as a key component of my master’s thesis, this app is designed to enhance public understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals by leveraging a microlearning strategy akin to that of Duolingo.

SecureMind aims to motivate individuals to acquire vital cybersecurity knowledge in a fun and engaging manner. To gather insights on user experience, I invite participants to voluntarily share their usage data, which will aid in evaluating the effectiveness of the app’s various features.

How SecureMind Works

The app is organized into chapters and sections that cover essential cybersecurity topics. Before diving into a chapter, users undergo a preliminary knowledge assessment. This enables them to gauge their initial understanding and measure their progress after completing each section. Each segment comprises a concise informational snippet followed by a quiz, ensuring grasp of the material.

Upon completing the first chapter, users unlock a library filled with previously covered information, which expands with every chapter completed. This engaging feature aims to foster long-term retention of essential knowledge. Additionally, I regularly publish brief updates on cybersecurity news to keep users informed about the latest developments in the field.

Making Learning Fun through Gamification

Recognizing that traditional learning methods can be dry and unappealing, I incorporated gamification elements to enhance the user experience. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for engaging with the material, utilizing the library, and reading up on news updates. Users not only gain points as they learn but also face the challenge of maintaining their Security IQ, which diminishes with inactivity—a compelling motivation to stay engaged.

In addition, users earn coins that can be spent on customizing their app experience, from altering the app icon to setting personalized notification titles. This level of personalization adds an enjoyable twist to the learning process.

Credible Content Backed by Research

Understanding that delivering effective security advice can be challenging, I utilized the content from the DiFĂĽ initiative—endorsed by the German government—as a foundation for the app’s material. Every piece of information has been thoroughly reviewed by my thesis supervisor to ensure accuracy and reliability.

I wholeheartedly encourage you to explore SecureMind and share it with your peers. Your support not only aids in my research but also contributes to a more security-conscious community.
