For my master’s thesis, I created a cybersecurity educational app inspired by Duolingo

Launching SecureMind: An Innovative iOS App for Cybersecurity Education

Greetings, readers!

I am excited to share the development of my new iOS application, SecureMind, designed to enhance public understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals. This project was a critical component of my master’s thesis and draws inspiration from the user-friendly and effective learning strategies employed by Duolingo.

What is SecureMind?
SecureMind is a microlearning platform that makes cybersecurity knowledge accessible and engaging. By utilizing principles of mobile learning, I aim to motivate users to explore and absorb key concepts in a subject that has become increasingly vital in our digital age.

How Does It Work?
Upon starting, users undergo a brief assessment to gauge their existing knowledge. This self-evaluation method not only personalizes the learning experience but also allows for measurable progress tracking. After users complete each chapter, they can see how much they’ve improved compared to their initial assessment.

The content is organized into clearly defined chapters, with each chapter containing a series of concise lessons followed by quizzes. This format ensures users not only learn but actively engage with the material.

Key Features:
To facilitate long-term retention of knowledge, SecureMind introduces a comprehensive library that unlocks as users progress. This growing repository helps reinforce previously learned concepts, while also offering timely updates on current cybersecurity news.

To keep users motivated—and to make learning enjoyable—I’ve integrated gamification elements. The Security IQ system grants points for engaging with lessons, utilizing the library, and keeping up with news. The more frequently a user interacts with the app, the higher their Security IQ, creating an exciting challenge to maintain that level, as inactivity can lead to a decline in points.

Users can also earn coins, which can be used to personalize their experience by customizing app icons, setting personalized notification titles, and much more.

Content Credibility:
Recognizing the complexities involved in providing accurate security advice, I used the Digital FĂĽhrerschein (DiFĂĽ) as a foundational resource, with the added assurance of scrutiny from my academic supervisor. This collaboration ensures the information provided is not only reliable but also relevant.

I invite you to explore SecureMind and discover a dynamic way to strengthen your cybersecurity knowledge. Your feedback and support would be invaluable to my research and the app’s development.
