Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Learning Cybersecurity
Hello, dear readers!
I am excited to share with you my latest project, an iOS application called SecureMind. Developed as a component of my master’s thesis, this app combines the engaging principles of Duolingo with the vital subject of cybersecurity, aiming to educate users on its fundamentals in a fun and interactive manner.
The concept behind SecureMind is rooted in my research into mobile microlearning and its effectiveness in motivating individuals to grasp essential cybersecurity concepts. Users are given the option to share their usage data voluntarily, which will aid in evaluating how well different features are being utilized.
Key Features of SecureMind
The app is designed with a structured approach, featuring chapters and sections that cover various aspects of cybersecurity. Before diving into each chapter, users undergo a brief assessment of their prior knowledge, which is subsequently revisited at the end of all sections to measure improvement. Each segment includes a concise snippet of information followed by quizzes to check comprehension, reinforcing the material learned.
To facilitate long-term retention of knowledge, SecureMind unlocks a library of previously covered information after completing the first chapter, continually expanding as users progress. Additionally, I regularly publish brief updates on current cybersecurity news to keep users informed about the latest trends and threats.
Engaging Learning Through Gamification
Recognizing that traditional video courses can often be dull, I have incorporated two key gamification elements into SecureMind. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for their engagement with the material, library use, and news reading. The more they interact with the app, the higher their IQ. However, maintaining a high IQ requires sustained activity, as daily inactivity can lead to a decrease in points.
Users also earn coins that allow customization options, such as selecting app icons and personalizing notification titles, enhancing the overall experience.
The content of SecureMind is grounded in credible sources, beginning with the DiFü framework, supported by the German government. My supervisor reviewed the material to ensure that users receive accurate and practical cybersecurity advice.

I invite you to explore SecureMind and consider sharing it with your peers. Your feedback will not only contribute to my research but also promote cybersecurity awareness in our communities.
