For my master’s thesis, I created an educational application on cybersecurity modeled after Duolingo.

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Learning Cybersecurity

Greetings, tech enthusiasts!

I am excited to share my latest endeavor—a new iOS application named SecureMind, which aims to provide an engaging and accessible way for individuals to understand the fundamentals of cybersecurity. This app was developed as part of my master’s thesis and draws inspiration from the educational techniques popularized by platforms like Duolingo. My research focuses on how mobile microlearning can inspire and motivate users to enhance their knowledge in this essential field.

Users of SecureMind can opt to share their anonymized usage data, which will aid in evaluating the effectiveness and popularity of various app features. This feedback is invaluable for refining the learning experience.

Key Features of SecureMind

The app is organized systematically, with content divided into chapters and sections covering key cybersecurity principles. At the beginning of each chapter, users are asked to complete a brief assessment that gauges their existing knowledge. After absorbing the lessons within the sections, they can take a follow-up quiz to measure their progress, giving them a clear understanding of their development.

To facilitate long-term knowledge retention, a library of previously learned concepts is unlocked after the completion of the first chapter. This library expands with each new chapter, allowing users to revisit and reinforce their understanding over time. Additionally, I regularly share updates on the latest trends and news in cybersecurity to keep the content fresh and relevant.

Engaging Learning Through Gamification

Recognizing that traditional learning methods can often feel tedious, I’ve integrated gamification techniques into SecureMind to make the experience enjoyable. One major feature is the Security IQ system, where users earn points for learning new concepts, utilizing the library, and keeping up with the news. This score reflects their level of engagement—while active users see their IQ increase, inactivity can lead to a decrease, encouraging consistent interaction.

Users also collect coins through their activities, which can be spent on personalizing aspects of the app, such as customizing the app icon or selecting unique titles for notifications.

In developing the app’s content, I utilized resources from the Digital FĂĽhrerschein (DiFĂĽ), a program backed by the German government, to ensure accuracy and reliability. My academic supervisor further reviewed the material to maintain a high standard of information.

I invite you to explore SecureMind and help spread the word! Your support not only assists in enhancing your cybersecurity knowledge but also contributes to my research efforts.
