Unraveling a Unexpected Mystery: A Phone Found in the Fridge

Hello everyone!

Recently, I encountered a puzzling situation while nannying for a family that I felt compelled to share. While watching the kids, I kept hearing a persistent vibrating sound coming from their refrigerator. My curiosity led me to investigate, and to my surprise, I discovered an iPhone nestled among the groceries, inexplicably set to airplane mode.

Intrigued, I approached the family to ask about it. They explained that the phone had previously been submerged in water, which resulted in it only functioning in airplane mode and specifically when stored in the fridge. I couldn’t help but wonder: Is this a plausible scenario, or is there something more concerning happening here?

Am I overanalyzing the situation, or is there genuinely something unusual about their explanation?

Upon reflection, and after gathering insights from those who responded to my initial query, I decided against returning for my last day of nannying. The entire affair felt too peculiar to ignore. For context, the child I was caring for has autism and is nonverbal, leading me to believe the phone was not intended for him. While I witnessed the device vibrating in response to some notifications, I hesitated to investigate further for fear of being watched.

In hindsight, I approached the situation naively, assuming the family might genuinely need the phone for work. However, their response raised red flags that I couldn’t dismiss.

I appreciate all the support and validation I received from this community. If anyone is still curious or skeptical, I am more than willing to share details, pictures, or whatever could help clarify this bizarre find.

Thanks for reading, and stay tuned for more of my adventures in nannying!

  1. Hi there,

It’s certainly an unusual situation you encountered. From a technical support perspective, if the phone was submerged in water and is only functioning in airplane mode, it suggests significant water damage affecting the device’s internal components, particularly the antenna and communication modules. This damage could cause the phone to only operate in a limited capacity or in a state where it cannot connect to networks, which might explain the airplane mode default.

If the phone is vibrating in response to notifications, it means the device is still somewhat powered and able to process alerts, but the internal damage might be causing it to behave abnormally. As a precaution, if you or the family are concerned about the device being water-damaged and potentially compromised, it’s wise to consider professional diagnostics or data sanitation, especially if the phone may contain sensitive information.

In the future, if you encounter devices in unexpected places, especially those that appear water-damaged or suspicious, disconnecting power and advising proper disposal or secure handling is recommended. Handling water-damaged electronics with caution helps prevent further safety hazards or data breaches.

Hope this helps clarify some technical aspects of your situation. Stay safe and vigilant!
