Important Update: r/Cybersecurity to Go Private from June 12th to 14th in Protest of Reddit API Changes
Attention, community members! We have been listening closely to your feedback on our recent discussions about Reddit’s new API policies and the impact they have on third-party applications. The overwhelming response indicates that most of you strongly oppose Reddit’s decision to restrict access and effectively push these applications out of the picture.
In light of this, we want to inform you that r/cybersecurity will transition to a private subreddit from June 12th to June 14th, effectively participating in a 48-hour blackout. This action aims to draw attention to these changes, and we sincerely hope it will prompt Reddit to reconsider its course of action.
During this blackout period, the subreddit will be inaccessible to new members and unauthenticated users. We also encourage our community to refrain from visiting Reddit entirely during these 48 hours. Your voice matters! If you have thoughts on how we should proceed during the blackout—whether it’s limiting new posts and comments or introducing alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky—please feel free to share your ideas in the comment section.
The future remains uncertain. Reddit might respond positively and reverse the changes, or they could undertake further measures that might erode trust even more—such as removing moderators or forcing the subreddit to remain public against our will. Regardless of the outcome, serving as your moderators has been a privilege.
