r/cybersecurity to Go Private in Protest Against Reddit’s API Changes

In response to growing concerns from the community regarding Reddit’s recent alterations to its API and the subsequent hindrance of third-party applications, the r/cybersecurity subreddit will temporarily transition to a private status from June 12th to June 14th. This protest aims to voice the collective discontent over these changes.

Following a thorough review of community feedback gathered from members and modmail, it is clear that a significant portion of our users is calling for Reddit to reassess its decisions regarding the limitations on third-party applications. In light of this overwhelming sentiment, we have decided to enact a 48-hour blackout of the subreddit unless changes are made to the current API policy.

During this blackout, the subreddit will be inaccessible to new members and users who are not logged in. We strongly encourage everyone to refrain from visiting Reddit during this period as a show of solidarity. We’d love to hear your suggestions on how to make the most of this protest; options could include limiting new discussions or introducing our community to alternative social media platforms such as Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky.

As we embark on this course of action, we remain uncertain about Reddit’s response. They may choose to relent and alter their API stance, or they might take further steps that could erode trust, such as removing moderators or mandating the subreddit to remain publicly accessible. Regardless of the outcome, it has been a privilege to serve this community, and we stand united in our commitment to its integrity.
