r/Cybersecurity Goes Dark: Join Us in Our Fight Against Reddit’s API Changes
As of June 12th to June 14th, the r/cybersecurity subreddit will be going private in response to Reddit’s recent API modifications and the discontinuation of third-party applications.
After careful consideration and analysis of community feedback — both from discussions on our platform and via modmail — it’s clear that a significant majority of our members feel strongly about reversing these API restrictions that threaten third-party app functionality.
In light of this situation, we will participate in a 48-hour blackout. Should Reddit choose not to amend its policy, we’ll consult with our community to determine the next course of action, whether that involves extending the protest or exploring alternative strategies.
During the blackout period, access to the subreddit will be limited. New members and unauthenticated users will find themselves unable to enter the community. We also encourage everyone to refrain from visiting Reddit altogether during this time. We welcome your suggestions on how to utilize this period effectively, whether that means restricting posts and comments, connecting with other social platforms such as Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky, or creating a dedicated thread for discussions.
The outcome of these protests remains uncertain; Reddit may choose to reconsider its position, or they might implement measures that could further erode trust, such as removing moderators or enforcing a public-facing subreddit. Regardless of what unfolds, it’s been a privilege serving as your moderators.
