Important Announcement: r/Cybersecurity Goes Dark to Protest API Changes
From June 12th to June 14th, the r/cybersecurity subreddit will temporarily become private as part of a larger protest against Reddit’s recent API modifications and the discontinuation of third-party applications.
In response to the overwhelming feedback we’ve received both through our community discussions and modmail, it’s evident that many members of r/cybersecurity are dissatisfied with Reddit’s current direction regarding its API policies. The community is advocating for a reconsideration of these changes, which severely affect the functionality and diversity of our online interactions.
If we do not see a reversal in Reddit’s stance, r/cybersecurity will participate in the blackout for a full 48 hours, commencing on June 12th and concluding on June 14th. During this period, the subreddit will be unavailable to new users and those without authenticated accounts. Furthermore, we encourage everyone to abstain from browsing Reddit entirely during the blackout. Your voice is essential—let us know if you have any suggestions on how we can utilize this time effectively, whether by limiting posts and comments, creating discussions on alternative platforms like Mastodon or Bluesky, or starting community chat threads.
The outcomes of this protest are uncertain. Reddit might choose to reconsider its position, or it could escalate the situation by taking more drastic actions, including removing moderators or enforcing rules to keep the subreddit publicly accessible. Regardless of the outcome, we value the opportunity to serve this community and appreciate your support as we navigate these challenges.
