r/cybersecurity to Go Private in Protest of Reddit’s API Changes
In response to overwhelming community feedback, we have decided to take action against Reddit’s recent API modifications that threaten the existence of third-party applications. From June 12th to June 14th, r/cybersecurity will temporarily transition to a private subreddit as part of a collective protest.
The sentiment among our members has been clear: many of you are dissatisfied with Reddit’s choice to restrict access and eliminate support for third-party apps, which significantly impacts how we engage with the platform. Unless Reddit reconsiders these changes, our subreddit will remain inaccessible to new users and those who are not logged into their accounts during this 48-hour protest.
During this period, we strongly advise everyone to refrain from visiting Reddit altogether. We value your input on how we can best utilize this blackout. Suggestions could include limiting new posts and comments, facilitating introductions to alternative social media platforms such as Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky, or creating a discussion thread for community interaction.
There are two possibilities ahead: Reddit may choose to reverse its decision, or it could take actions that further erode trust within the community, including potentially removing moderators or forcing r/cybersecurity to remain public. Regardless of the outcome, we remain committed to serving this community.
To gain a better understanding of the current situation and the reasons behind our protest, we encourage you to review the following resources:
- A concise infographic explaining the issue created by r/videos
- Discussion thread on the implications of the API changes
- An open letter addressing the situation regarding API pricing and third-party applications
- A growing list of major Reddit communities participating in the blackout
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to hearing your thoughts on how we should proceed.
