Join Us in the Blackout: r/Cybersecurity Takes a Stand Against Reddit’s API Changes
From June 12th to June 14th, the r/cybersecurity community will temporarily close its doors to protest recent changes to Reddit’s API policies, which threaten the existence of third-party applications.
In response to overwhelming feedback from our community, it has become clear that many of you are passionate about reversing or modifying Reddit’s decision to eliminate support for these valuable third-party tools. Unless we see a retraction of these changes, r/cybersecurity will participate in a 48-hour blackout, starting on June 12th. We aim to convey our collective concern and urge Reddit to reconsider its approach.
During this blackout period, the subreddit will be inaccessible to both new members and unauthenticated users. We also encourage our community members to refrain from visiting Reddit altogether. Your participation in this protest is crucial, and we welcome any suggestions you have for actions we can take during this time. Possible ideas include restricting new posts and comments, introducing users to alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky, or even creating a general chat thread for community support.
As the situation unfolds, Reddit may choose to address our concerns and revert their API policy, or they may instead opt for more drastic measures that undermine trust within our community. Regardless of the outcome, it has truly been a privilege to serve as moderators for such a dedicated group of individuals.
