r/Cybersecurity Goes Dark: A Protest Against Reddit’s Latest API Changes
From June 12th to June 14th, the r/cybersecurity subreddit will temporarily close its doors in a demonstration against Reddit’s recent alterations to its API, which have detrimental effects on third-party applications.
After carefully reviewing community feedback, it’s clear that a significant majority of members are dissatisfied with Reddit’s decision to restrict API access. This shift threatens the ecosystem of third-party applications that many users rely on, and it is crucial for the community to voice its objections.
If Reddit does not reconsider these changes, r/cybersecurity will observe a 48-hour blackout, during which time the subreddit will be inaccessible to new members and unauthenticated users. During this period, community engagement is encouraged to be minimized, and we invite you to step away from Reddit altogether. We believe that taking a united stand will amplify our message.
Should the situation remain unresolved, we will be reaching out to the community for further action, whether that means extending the blackout or exploring alternative forms of protest. Your input is invaluable in determining our next steps.
Additionally, we welcome any suggestions on activities during the blackout. Ideas may include limiting new posts, fostering discussions about alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky, or even creating dedicated threads to discuss our concerns.
While we hope for a positive response from Reddit, we are prepared for various outcomes, including the potential for further actions that could undermine the trust within our community. Regardless of the outcome, we appreciate your support and engagement throughout this process.
