r/cybersecurity to Go Private in Protest Against Reddit’s API Changes

In response to overwhelming feedback from our community, we have made the decision to temporarily restrict access to r/cybersecurity from June 12th to June 14th. This action is a protest against Reddit’s recent modifications to its API policies, which threaten the existence of third-party applications vital to our user experience.

The sentiment within our community is clear: many of you are against Reddit’s move to limit API access and are urging the platform to reconsider these drastic changes. Should Reddit choose to maintain its current course, r/cybersecurity will initiate a 48-hour blackout during which the subreddit will be unavailable to new visitors and unauthenticated users.

During this blackout phase, we strongly encourage our members to refrain from accessing Reddit altogether. Additionally, we invite you to share your thoughts on how we can collectively respond during this period. Suggestions could include limiting new posts and comments, introducing members to alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky, or even establishing a general discussion thread for community engagement.

The outcome of this protest is uncertain. Reddit may choose to reconsider its policies and restore trust with its user base, or it could take further actions that might exacerbate the situation—such as dismissing moderators or pressuring us to keep the subreddit public. Regardless of the outcome, we remain committed to serving this community and appreciate your support during this challenging time.
