r/Cybersecurity Joins Forces for a Blackout: A Stand Against Reddit’s API Changes
From June 12th to June 14th, the r/Cybersecurity subreddit will temporarily go private in response to Reddit’s controversial changes regarding its API and the termination of third-party applications. This decision is fueled by overwhelming feedback from our community, advocating for a reconsideration of Reddit’s recent policies.
After analyzing the responses we received on our previous post and through modmail, it’s clear that the majority of you feel strongly about the need for Reddit to revise or entirely reverse its decision concerning these changes. If Reddit does not adjust its stance, r/Cybersecurity will embark on a 48-hour blackout beginning June 12th and concluding on June 14th. In the case that no changes are made, we will reach out to you for suggestions on how to proceed—whether to extend the protest, take alternative actions, or explore other community-driven solutions.
During this blackout period, the subreddit will not be accessible to new members or users who are not logged in. We encourage everyone to refrain from visiting Reddit entirely during this time. If you have innovative ideas on how our community should engage during the blackout—be it through restricting new posts and comments, introducing alternative platforms like Mastodon or Bluesky, or facilitating chat discussions—please share your thoughts in the comments below.
We recognize that Reddit may either respond by reconsidering their choices or by taking further measures that could undermine trust, such as removing moderators or forcing the subreddit to remain public. Regardless of the outcome, it has been a privilege to serve this community.
