Google Screwed Me. Help and Beware.

Title: My Frustrating Experience with Google Account Suspension: A Cautionary Tale

Last Sunday morning started like any other until I encountered a bewildering scenario: my Google account was unexpectedly suspended at around 1 AM. Despite my vigilance in using two-factor authentication, it seemed that my account may have been compromised. I worried it could be a result of a lurking virus on my phone, but whatever the cause, I was immediately set on the path to resolution.

Upon discovering the suspension, I followed the standard procedures to file an appeal. However, I was met with a frustratingly simplistic form that only provided a single text box to explain why my account should be restored. As a long-time Google user with a spotless record, I was perplexed by the abruptness of this action, especially considering there had been no prior warnings or indications that my account was at risk.

I reached out to customer support, first with Google Fi and later with Google Play, only to be told that my only option was to submit the form. They were unable to assist me further. Unsurprisingly, I submitted my appeal and then left for a week on a business trip.

Now, let me take a moment to share how integrated Google has become in my daily life. I have been a supporter of several of Google’s offerings, including:

  • Google Fi (which I joined during its beta phase and recently upgraded to a Pixel 4 XL)
  • Nest (which I find indispensable for home security and now mandates a Google account)
  • Gmail (my primary platform for personal communication)
  • Google Drive
  • Google Chrome
  • And several other services

Imagine my shock when, just three days later, I received a terse response indicating that my account would not be reinstated due to a violation of the Terms of Service. There was no explanation provided, just a link to the Terms for my perusal. The reality of being cut off from my home security, messaging services, and email while away from family was infuriating. It felt utterly unprofessional coming from a giant like Google.

In my desperation, I replied once more, requesting clarification and steps to rectify the situation. Unfortunately, four days have passed, and my inbox remains devoid of any response. My next course of action was to attempt porting my number to another service—a task complicated by the fact that Google Fi requires authentication through the same account that I’m currently locked out of.
