Hacker talks to me through notepad and I don’t know if they’re really gone

An Unexpected Encounter with a Hacker: A Cautionary Tale

In an age where cyber threats loom large, my recent experience serves as a stark reminder of how vulnerable we can be online. While working on my computer, I was startled by an unexpected popup that read simply “:)” in the top left corner. The accompanying message was alarming: “Hello, do not freak out, or shut off your device. I have gained access to this machine and just wanted to inform you that I am removing my access. Please note that I have not altered or harmed your device. Apologies for the inconvenience.”

Initially, I felt a wave of apprehension wash over me. A few minutes later, I noticed my cursor inexplicably moving towards the Windows Search Bar, then opening my Notes app on its own. To my shock, this intruder began typing “hello.” Against my better judgment, I replied with “WHO IS THIS?” This individual claimed that I had unknowingly downloaded a virus and was now visible on what he referred to as his “panel.” He didn’t provide much more detail before a popup declared, “Host terminated connection – Client Disconnected.”

Reflecting on my online activities, I struggled to identify how this could have happened. The last notable interaction I had with anything suspicious was downloading a game from GameJolt that merely altered my desktop background and attempted to create a chilling atmosphere—far from the hacker’s insinuation of a profound breach.

This unsettling incident has left me pondering the risks we encounter with every click. Is it time we all reassess our online security measures? Have you ever experienced anything similar? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and let’s discuss how we can better protect ourselves in an increasingly interconnected world.
