Navigating the Uncharted Waters of Cybersecurity: My New Responsibility

Stepping into a new job often comes with a mix of excitement and anxiety, especially when you’re handed responsibilities that feel beyond your expertise. Recently, I joined a company with some expectations around my involvement in technology, but to my surprise, I was soon assigned the daunting task of managing cybersecurity. With minimal guidance and no prior experience in this specialized field, I quickly realized I was in over my head.

The Unexpected Challenge

During my interview, discussions around my role included providing support with computer-related tasks. However, I was unaware that I would be thrust into the position of overseeing the organization’s cybersecurity efforts. It became clear that there was a significant lack of established protocols, as this task hadn’t been addressed before my arrival. Despite my enthusiasm for the challenge, I found myself facing a steep learning curve with no formal training, certifications, or substantial experience in security management.

Luckily, our organization is not currently under heavy scrutiny, but we are anticipating increased visibility in the near future. With plans to hire a professional security consultant, my goal is to ensure that we can present ourselves as a cohesive and prepared company. The last thing I want is for our team to feel unprepared when the time comes to engage with an expert who knows the ins and outs of cybersecurity.
