Navigating Burnout in Cybersecurity: A 3-Year Journey

After dedicating three years to the field of cybersecurity, fueled by a Master’s degree and experience with some of the industry’s leading companies, I find myself grappling with a growing sense of fatigue. On paper, my credentials appear impressive, yet the reality is far from it.

The constant pressure to enhance my skills and productivity has become overwhelming. Each workday feels like a struggle, as I attempt to condense tasks that should naturally take days into mere hours, all to satisfy demanding deadlines. This relentless pursuit is starting to take its toll on my well-being.

While I genuinely appreciate the concept of cybersecurity and find the work engaging, the daily grind has morphed into a monotonous routine. My days often stretch beyond the standard 9 to 5, leaving me drained by evening. With little energy left to pursue my personal interests or tackle household responsibilities, I find myself stuck in a repetitive cycle—work, rinse, repeat. A brief getaway provides a temporary reprieve, but soon I’m thrust back into the same exhausting rhythm.

I can’t help but wonder if this is a classic case of burnout, if I’ve misplaced my professional focus, or if this is the norm within the tech and cybersecurity sectors. Whatever it may be, I’m left questioning my motivations and the direction of my career.
