Approximately a month ago, the trouble began when my friend’s mother’s computer was compromised. The hacker managed to infiltrate not only her financial details but also those of her aunt living in Taiwan. Posing as a legitimate entity, they crafted deceptive pop-ups and forms that masqueraded as communication from Charles Schwab, the banking institution linked to her mother’s sister’s finances.

The Disturbing Developments

Since the initial breach, the hacker escalated their intrusion, taking complete control of my friend’s mother’s laptop. This individual has engaged in unsettling behavior: changing text fonts, blacking out the screen at will, and rendering print jobs into nonsensical test prints. Worse still, the hacker has reportedly been intercepting both landline and cell phone conversations. A particularly chilling incident occurred when my friend’s mother warned her friend over their landline that it was compromised and instructed them to contact her cell phone instead. To their shock, the hacker played back a recording of her warning, directed through the phone’s line.

Additionally, this cybercriminal has resorted to sending ominous text messages, including threats to infect friends and family with viruses. Fabricating a sense of intimidation, the hacker even resorted to exclaiming, “I’m yelling at you.”

Taking Action

In response to this distressing series of events, my friend’s family made a crucial decision: they disconnected all devices connected to their home internet and her father obtained a new phone number and device. Nonetheless, unsettlingly, he soon received text messages attempting to verify a Yahoo account that he never created.

To safeguard their interests, I advised them to consider using a burner phone for critical communications and to be proactive in monitoring their credit and bank accounts for any unusual activities.
