My father, not particularly tech-savvy, received a phone call from someone claiming to represent his Internet Service Provider (ISP). Without fully understanding the implications, he unwittingly granted this individual access to his laptop via TeamViewer.
The situation escalated when, after a few minutes, his computer screen went black—an unnerving moment that prompted him to terminate the connection. As someone who’s absorbed some cybersecurity knowledge largely from shows like Mr. Robot, I was immediately alarmed. The potential for malicious actors to install software for remote access or to extract sensitive information is a genuine concern.
In response to the situation, I devised a plan that felt prudent yet decisive. I suggested he disconnect from the internet to prevent any further access, followed by backing up his important files. My ultimate course of action was to perform a complete factory reset on his laptop. While I wasn’t entirely certain if this would fully mitigate the threat, it seemed the most sensible approach given the circumstances.
