Unsettling Realizations: Possible Router Vulnerability and Neighborly Eavesdropping

In today’s digital age, cybersecurity threats are all around us, and sometimes, the threats come from places we least expect. Recently, I experienced a rather unnerving situation that left me questioning the security of my home network. The thought that someone could be monitoring my online activity is as concerning as it is uncomfortable.

I suspect that my neighbor may have gained unauthorized access to my router. My network is secured with WEP encryption, which I now understand is not the most robust protection available. The situation escalated when I began to hear what sounded like my neighbor reading the content displayed on my computer screen, fueling my apprehension about potentially being hacked.

Unfortunately, attempts to access my router have been frustrating; I keep encountering a message indicating that the connection has “taken too long.” This has hindered my ability to investigate the issue further.

In an effort to identify any potential security breaches, I’ve already utilized software tools like HijackThis and Malwarebytes, specifically targeting rootkits, as well as a wireless network watcher. So far, these tools have not revealed any notable abnormalities. My operating system is Windows 7, which I understand may not be the most secure option either.
