I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Modern Approach to Cybersecurity Learning

Greetings, everyone!

I am excited to share with you my latest project, an iOS application named SecureMind. This app aims to make the learning of cybersecurity principles accessible to everyone, drawing inspiration from the engaging and interactive methods utilized by Duolingo. As part of my master’s thesis, I explored the effectiveness of mobile microlearning as a means to motivate individuals in acquiring essential cybersecurity knowledge.

Why SecureMind?

The primary goal of SecureMind is to educate the general public about cybersecurity essentials through an engaging and structured mobile platform. The content is divided into chapters and sections, providing a comprehensive overview of key topics. To personalize the learning experience, users undergo an assessment of their existing knowledge before starting each chapter, followed by a follow-up evaluation to demonstrate their progress after completing the material.

Each section offers concise information, coupled with a quiz designed to assess comprehension. This format not only helps users absorb the information but also reinforces their understanding through active participation.

Building Knowledge Over Time

One of the unique features of SecureMind is its evolving library, which unlocks previously learned information upon completion of the first chapter. This library continues to expand as users move through additional chapters, promoting a deeper retention of cybersecurity concepts. To keep users informed and engaged, I also publish brief articles on recent cybersecurity news.

Gamification: Making Learning Fun

In an effort to make the learning process enjoyable rather than tedious, I incorporated important aspects of gamification into the app. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for their interactions within the app, such as studying new material, accessing the library, and reviewing news articles. As users remain active, they can boost their Security IQ, but inactivity will result in a decrease, which adds an element of challenge.

Additionally, users can earn coins that enable them to customize their experience, from altering the app icon to setting personalized titles for notifications.

Expertise and Guidance

Recognizing the challenge of providing reliable security information, I utilized the DiFü initiative, supported by the German government, as a foundational source for the app’s content. This information was then curated and validated with the help of my supervisor to ensure accuracy and relevance.

I warmly invite you to explore SecureMind and encourage others to check it out as well. Your support not only aids my research but also contributes to a broader understanding of cybersecurity practices.
