I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Education

Hello, cybersecurity enthusiasts!

I’m excited to share a project close to my heart—SecureMind, an iOS app designed to teach the fundamentals of cybersecurity to everyone, regardless of their background. This innovative application, inspired by Duolingo’s engaging learning methodology, is part of my master’s thesis focused on exploring how mobile microlearning can effectively motivate individuals to acquire cybersecurity knowledge.

What is SecureMind?

SecureMind offers a structured learning experience with its content divided into chapters and sections. Upon starting, users undergo a brief assessment to gauge their prior knowledge, complemented by a follow-up test after they complete all the sections. This feature not only enhances comprehension but also allows users to track their learning progress over time.

Each section presents concise information followed by a quiz, ensuring users can engage with the material and confirm their understanding. Additionally, once users finish the first chapter, a dynamic library is unlocked, allowing them to revisit previously learned information as they advance through the subsequent chapters. To keep users updated on the ever-evolving world of cybersecurity, I also share short news articles relevant to the field.

Engaging Learning Through Gamification

To make learning more enjoyable—unlike traditional, often monotonous video courses—I have integrated two key gamification elements into SecureMind.

  1. The Security IQ System: Users earn points as they engage with the app’s features, including studying basics, utilizing the library, and reading the latest cybersecurity news. However, maintaining a high IQ requires regular participation; inactivity can lead to a decrease in points, encouraging consistent learning habits.

  2. Customizability with Coins: As users progress, they can earn coins that enable them to personalize their app experience. From changing the app icon to setting unique titles for notifications, users can enjoy a tailored learning environment.

Credible Content and Research Foundation

Creating trustworthy and actionable security advice can be challenging. With this in mind, I utilized the DiFü framework, which is backed by the German government, to formulate the app’s content. Each piece was meticulously reviewed by my academic supervisor to ensure accuracy and relevance.

I invite you to explore SecureMind for yourself and consider sharing it with those who might benefit from enhanced cybersecurity knowledge. Your support is invaluable in helping with my research and promoting a more informed public.
