I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Revolutionary Approach to Learning Cybersecurity

Hello, fellow tech enthusiasts!

I am excited to share the culmination of my master’s thesis—a cutting-edge iOS application called SecureMind. This innovative app is designed to demystify cybersecurity concepts for the general public, drawing inspiration from the immersive learning methods of platforms like Duolingo. My research focuses on leveraging mobile microlearning to motivate users to acquire vital cybersecurity knowledge.

What Does SecureMind Offer?

SecureMind is structured to provide users with a comprehensive learning experience, featuring cybersecurity fundamentals organized into manageable chapters and sections. The app begins with an assessment of the user’s existing knowledge, followed by a post-completion test after all sections are finished. This dual testing approach not only highlights your progress but also reinforces learning outcomes.

Each section is designed to deliver bite-sized information followed by relevant quizzes to ensure comprehension. To promote sustained learning, SecureMind features an expanding library. After completing the first chapter, users unlock access to previously learned content, which continues to grow as they advance further into the app.

In addition, I periodically publish concise updates on current cybersecurity news to keep users informed about the latest developments in the field.

Gamified Learning Experience

Understanding that traditional learning methods can often feel monotonous, I have integrated several gamification strategies into SecureMind. One of the standout features is the Security IQ system, which awards users with points for engaging in various activities, whether it be mastering fundamentals, utilizing the library, or reading news updates. However, maintaining a high IQ is a balancing act: inactivity can lead to a decrease in points, encouraging consistent engagement.

Users can also earn virtual coins that can be spent on customizing their app experience, from changing the app icon to setting personalized titles for notifications, making the learning experience not only informative but also enjoyable.

Building on Trusted Knowledge

Recognizing the challenges in providing effective security advice, I’ve based the app’s foundational content on the Digital Führerschein (DiFü)—an initiative supported by the German government. This content has been further refined with the assistance of my academic supervisor to ensure its reliability and relevance.

I invite you to explore SecureMind and consider sharing it with your friends, family, and colleagues. Your participation would greatly contribute to my research and help others in their journey toward understanding cybersecurity.
