Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Education
Hello readers,
I’m excited to share the launch of my iOS application, SecureMind, designed to teach essential cybersecurity concepts to a broad audience by drawing inspiration from Duolingo’s innovative learning methods. This app is a significant component of my master’s thesis, which explores how mobile microlearning techniques can enhance motivation and engagement in acquiring cybersecurity knowledge.
One unique aspect of SecureMind is the option for users to voluntarily provide usage data, allowing me to analyze the effectiveness of various features and improve the user experience.
Structure and Learning Features
SecureMind organizes cybersecurity concepts into a series of chapters and sections, creating a clear and engaging learning path. At the beginning of each chapter, users’ prior knowledge is assessed, which is followed by a review at the end of the chapter to highlight improvements made. Each section presents a concise piece of information, complemented by a quiz that reinforces understanding.
To support long-term retention of knowledge, the app includes a growing library that becomes available after the completion of the first chapter. This library allows users to revisit previously covered material with each successive chapter they finish. Additionally, I occasionally share short cybersecurity news updates to keep users informed about the latest developments in the field.
Engaging Learning Through Gamification
Recognizing that traditional video courses can often be dull, I incorporated two main gamification elements to make learning enjoyable. The Security IQ system awards points to users as they progress through the content, utilize the library, and read news updates. Active participation increases their Security IQ, which presents new challenges as maintaining it requires consistent engagement. Users can also earn coins that enable them to customize the app’s icon, set personalized notifications, and more.
When developing the app’s content, I took inspiration from the DiFü initiative, supported by the German government, ensuring that my advice is both practical and reliable. My thesis supervisor also reviewed the material to uphold quality standards.
I invite you to explore SecureMind and share it with friends and family. Your support not only contributes to the app’s growth but also assists me in my research!
