I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Education

Greetings, dear readers!

I am thrilled to share with you my latest project, SecureMind—an innovative iOS application designed to educate users on the essentials of cybersecurity. Inspired by the engaging learning methodology popularized by Duolingo, this app serves as the central element of my master’s thesis, which explores how mobile microlearning can effectively motivate users to enhance their cybersecurity knowledge.

SecureMind presents its content in a user-friendly format, carefully structured into chapters and sections. At the beginning of each chapter, users undergo a quick assessment that gauges their existing knowledge. After completing all sections, they can retest themselves to measure their progress and grasp of the material. Each section provides concise information followed by a quiz that checks users’ understanding, ensuring that learning remains interactive and effective.

To promote ongoing engagement and retention, SecureMind features a dynamic library that unlocks previously covered information after the completion of the first chapter. This library continues to expand with each additional chapter completed. Additionally, I strive to keep users informed by sharing bite-sized cybersecurity news regularly, maintaining relevance in an ever-evolving field.

Understanding the importance of a lively learning environment, I have integrated two primary gamification elements to make the experience far more enjoyable than traditional video courses. First, the Security IQ system rewards users with points for engaging with the content, utilizing the library, and reading the latest news articles. The more users interact with the app, the higher their IQ climbs—though they must remain active, as inactivity results in a gradual decrease of their score. Furthermore, users earn coins which can be redeemed for customizing their app icon, personalizing notification titles, and more!

Recognizing the challenges of providing effective security advice, I based the app’s content on the Digital Führerschein (DiFü), a program supported by the German government, and collaborated with my academic supervisor to ensure the accuracy and relevance of the information provided.

I invite you to try SecureMind for yourself and share it with others who may benefit. Your support is instrumental in aiding my research and helping to spread awareness about cybersecurity best practices.
