I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Revolutionary iOS App for Cybersecurity Learning

Hello, dear readers!

I am excited to share my latest project with you—a unique iOS application named SecureMind, designed to impart essential cybersecurity knowledge to the general public. Inspired by the successful educational model of Duolingo, this app serves as the foundation for my master’s thesis, which examines how mobile microlearning can effectively motivate users to engage with cybersecurity concepts.

What Is SecureMind?

SecureMind seeks to demystify the complexities of cybersecurity through a user-friendly interface, organized content, and engaging features. The app breaks down fundamental concepts into easily digestible chapters and sections, ensuring users can learn at their own pace. To kickstart the learning journey, each user’s existing knowledge is assessed before they dive into a new chapter. Upon completion, users revisit the initial assessment to monitor their progress and celebrate their improvements.

Each section within the app presents a concise piece of information followed by a quiz aimed at reinforcing understanding. In an effort to further promote retention, a resource library is unlocked after the completion of the first chapter, expanding as users progress through subsequent chapters. This library acts as a repository of knowledge, empowering learners to revisit and reinforce their learning at any time.

Engaging with Gamification

Recognizing the importance of making learning enjoyable (and steering clear of dull video courses), I have incorporated gamification elements into the app. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for a variety of activities, including learning new concepts, utilizing the library, and reading cybersecurity news updates that I periodically publish. This dynamic system not only heightens engagement but also fosters a sense of competition—users must remain active to maintain their IQ, as inactivity can lead to a decrease in points.

In addition to points, users can earn virtual coins that unlock customization options, allowing them to tailor their app experience with personalized icons and notification titles.

Content Credibility

Creating effective cybersecurity guidance is challenging, and to ensure the content is reliable, I utilized the DiFĂĽ (supported by the German government) as the initial basis. Additionally, the material has undergone review by my academic supervisor, further cementing its credibility.
