I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Learning Cybersecurity

Greetings, readers!

I am excited to share a project that I’ve been passionately working on as part of my master’s thesis: a unique iOS application named SecureMind. This app is designed to teach cybersecurity fundamentals to the general public using a methodology inspired by the popular language learning platform, Duolingo. My research focuses on how mobile microlearning can effectively engage users and enhance their understanding of crucial cybersecurity concepts.

At its core, SecureMind presents a structured approach to learning through a series of chapters and sections. Before diving into each chapter, users undergo a quick assessment to gauge their prior knowledge. Once they complete the sections, they have the opportunity to take a follow-up test that highlights their progress and areas of improvement. Each section is designed to provide concise information accompanied by a quiz that reinforces comprehension.

To promote long-term retention of knowledge, SecureMind introduces a growing library feature that unlocks after completing the first chapter. This library expands with each subsequent chapter completed, allowing users to revisit previously learned material and solidify their understanding. Additionally, I periodically share relevant cybersecurity news within the app to keep users informed about the latest developments in the field.

Understanding that traditional learning methods can often be tedious, I’ve incorporated gamification elements to make the experience more engaging. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for interacting with the app—whether it’s completing lessons, utilizing the library, or reading news updates. Daily engagement is crucial; users must actively participate to maintain and grow their IQ, while inactivity leads to a decrease in points. Furthermore, users can earn coins to customize their app experience (like changing the app icon and personalizing notification titles).

For the content of SecureMind, I utilized resources from the DiFü initiative, which has the support of the German government, ensuring the information is accurate and reliable. Furthermore, the app’s content has been carefully reviewed by my academic supervisor to maintain a high standard.

I welcome you to explore SecureMind and encourage you to share it with others who may benefit from increased cybersecurity awareness. Your support is invaluable to my research journey!
