I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Revolutionary App for Cybersecurity Learning

Greetings, everyone!

I’m excited to announce the launch of my new iOS application, SecureMind, designed to make cybersecurity education accessible to all. This initiative stemmed from my master’s thesis, where I explored how mobile microlearning could inspire individuals to enhance their cybersecurity knowledge—drawing inspiration from the engaging methods employed by Duolingo.

What is SecureMind?

SecureMind is a user-friendly app aimed at teaching the essentials of cybersecurity to a broad audience. The structure of the app is thoughtfully organized into chapters and sections, offering a logical progression through the material. Each chapter begins with an assessment of the user’s prior knowledge, allowing for a tailored learning experience. After completing the sections within a chapter, users can take a follow-up quiz to measure their understanding and observe their improvement over time.

Features Designed for Effective Learning

To enrich the learning journey, SecureMind introduces a dynamic library that unlocks upon the completion of the first chapter. This library grows as users advance, allowing them to revisit previously learned content—an effective strategy for long-term retention. Additionally, I regularly share concise updates and insights on cybersecurity news, keeping the content fresh and relevant.

Engaging Gamification Elements

Recognizing that traditional learning methods may sometimes lack engagement, I’ve integrated two key gamification features into SecureMind. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for participating in lessons, utilizing the library, and reading news articles. User activity not only enhances their IQ score but also adds a layer of challenge: inactivity leads to a gradual IQ decrease, encouraging consistent engagement. Moreover, users earn coins, which can be spent on app customization options, including personalizing app icons and setting unique titles for notifications.

In shaping the app’s content, I took inspiration from the Digital Führerschein (DiFü) initiative, supported by the German government, ensuring that the information provided is accurate and reliable. My supervisor also reviewed the content to reinforce its quality.

Join the SecureMind Community

I invite you to explore SecureMind and contribute to the growing cybersecurity knowledge base. Your participation not only enhances your understanding but also aids my research. If you find value in the app, please share it with friends, family, or colleagues who may benefit from improving their cybersecurity skills.
