I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Learning

Greetings, readers!

I’m excited to share with you the launch of my innovative iOS app, SecureMind, which aims to make cybersecurity education both accessible and engaging for individuals from all walks of life. Developed as part of my master’s thesis, this app draws inspiration from the popular language-learning platform, Duolingo, to create an interactive learning experience focused on cybersecurity fundamentals.

The Essence of SecureMind

SecureMind is designed to help users grasp essential cybersecurity concepts through a mobile microlearning framework. Users have the option to share their usage data voluntarily, enabling me to assess how various features are utilized and optimize the learning experience.

The app is thoughtfully structured into chapters and sections, each culminating in a comprehensive assessment. At the beginning of each chapter, users’ prior knowledge is gauged, followed by a post-completion test to measure their progress and understanding. Each section delivers bite-sized information paired with quizzes, ensuring that learning is both effective and manageable.

Features that Enhance Learning

One of the unique aspects of SecureMind is its dynamic library feature, which unlocks previously learned material after completing the first chapter. This library continues to expand with each additional chapter, promoting long-term knowledge retention. Moreover, I provide short updates on current cybersecurity news, keeping users informed about the latest developments in the field.

Gamification for Engagement

To combat the often mundane nature of traditional e-learning, I’ve integrated engaging gamification elements into the app. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for completing lessons, utilizing the library, and reading the latest news updates. As users become more active learners, their IQ rises; however, inactivity leads to a gradual decrease, fostering a sense of motivation to stay engaged. Additionally, users earn coins that can be used to customize their app experience—ranging from changing the app icon to setting personalized notification titles.

In crafting the app’s content, I took inspiration from the DiFü (Digital Führerschein) program, which is supported by the German government, ensuring that the information presented is not only accurate but valuable. My supervisor also reviewed the app content to maintain quality and relevance.

Join Me in This Journey

I invite you to explore SecureMind and contribute to a greater understanding of cybersecurity. Your feedback and support would be invaluable as I continue my research in the field of mobile microlearning.
