I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Education

As a part of my master’s thesis, I am excited to unveil my latest project: SecureMind, an innovative iOS application designed to make learning the fundamentals of cybersecurity accessible and engaging for everyone. Inspired by the interactive methods used by platforms like Duolingo, this app serves as a tool for mobile microlearning, aiming to empower users with essential cybersecurity knowledge.

What Is SecureMind?

SecureMind facilitates learning through a structured curriculum divided into chapters and sections that cover critical cybersecurity concepts. Users begin by evaluating their existing knowledge before embarking on their learning journey. Upon completing each chapter, they undergo an assessment to measure their progress, allowing them to visualize their advancements clearly.

Each learning segment features concise information snippets paired with quizzes that reinforce comprehension and retention. This design not only makes the learning experience interactive but also ensures that users can quickly grasp crucial information.

Building a Knowledge Repository

To enhance long-term knowledge retention, SecureMind includes a dynamic library that becomes available after finishing the first chapter. Users can revisit previously learned material, which expands with every new chapter completed, reinforcing their understanding and providing continuous learning opportunities. Additionally, I occasionally update the app with brief cybersecurity news articles to keep users informed about the latest developments in the field.

Gamification to Inspire Engagement

In an effort to make the learning process enjoyable and avoid the pitfalls of traditional, monotonous video courses, I have infused gamification elements into the app. Users can track their progress through the Security IQ system, which awards points for completing lessons, utilizing the library, and engaging with current cybersecurity news. However, maintaining a high IQ score requires consistent activity, adding a fun challenge for users.

Additionally, users can earn coins through their engagement, which can be used to customize app features such as changing the app icon and personalizing notification titles. These elements work together to create an engaging and motivating learning environment.

Backed by Research

Understanding that providing effective security advice is challenging, I based the content in SecureMind on the DiFü curriculum, a program endorsed by the German government. Each aspect of the app’s content was thoroughly reviewed by my academic supervisor to ensure accuracy and relevancy.

Try It Out!

I invite you to download SecureMind and explore its features for yourself. Your feedback not only supports my research journey but also contributes to a collective effort in promoting
