I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Learning Cybersecurity

In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, understanding cybersecurity is more essential than ever. To address this need, I am excited to introduce SecureMind, an innovative iOS application that serves as a bridge between knowledge and practical application in cybersecurity. This project, which forms a pivotal part of my master’s thesis, draws inspiration from Duolingo’s successful microlearning model, aiming to make cybersecurity education accessible and engaging for everyone.

The Concept Behind SecureMind

SecureMind is designed to deliver cybersecurity fundamentals to a broad audience through bite-sized lessons that facilitate easy comprehension and retention. The app’s structure is thoughtfully organized into chapters and sections, where each chapter begins with an assessment of the user’s existing knowledge, followed by a review at the end to evaluate progress. This allows users to witness their own improvement firsthand.

Each lesson offers concise snippets of critical information, immediately followed by quizzes that reinforce understanding. By actively engaging with the material, users can effectively grasp foundational concepts in cybersecurity.

Maximizing Retention and Engagement

To promote long-term retention of learned information, SecureMind unlocks a library feature after the completion of the first chapter. This library expands with each chapter completed, serving as a valuable resource for revisiting previous lessons. Additionally, users will find timely cybersecurity news articles curated within the app, keeping them informed about the latest developments in the field.

Understanding that traditional education methods can often be tedious, I incorporated gamification elements to make learning enjoyable. The Security IQ system rewards users with points as they learn and engage with the app’s various offerings. Maintaining a high Security IQ encourages consistent usage—however, inactivity can lead to a decrease in IQ, adding an element of challenge.

Moreover, users can earn coins through their activity, which can be used to customize their app experience. Whether it’s personalizing the app icon or setting unique notification titles, SecureMind allows for a tailored learning journey.

Quality Content Backed by Research

Recognizing the complexities involved in providing sound cybersecurity advice, I structured the app’s content using the Digital Führerschein (DiFü) program as a base, which is supported by the German government. This foundation was further enhanced through oversight from my academic supervisor, ensuring that the information presented is accurate and reliable.

I invite you to explore SecureMind and become part of this exciting learning initiative. Your engagement not only enriches your own knowledge but also contributes to valuable research in the field of
