I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Education

Greetings, readers!

I am excited to share my latest project: an iOS application named SecureMind, designed to educate users on cybersecurity fundamentals in an engaging and interactive manner. Inspired by the popular language-learning platform Duolingo, this app serves as a cornerstone for my master’s thesis, where I explore the efficacy of mobile microlearning in enhancing cybersecurity awareness among the general public.

What Makes SecureMind Unique?

SecureMind operates on the premise that learning should be both enjoyable and effective. The app breaks down essential cybersecurity concepts into manageable chapters and sections, facilitating a structured learning experience. Upon initiating the app, users have the opportunity to assess their existing knowledge through introductory quizzes. After completing each section, users will be tested again, allowing them to track their progress and identify areas for improvement.

To foster long-term retention of information, SecureMind introduces a dedicated library that opens up after the first chapter. This library serves as a repository for previously learned material, which expands as users progress through the app. Additionally, I regularly provide concise news updates on current cybersecurity topics, keeping users informed and engaged.

Engagement Through Gamification

One of the standout features of SecureMind is its gamification elements. Unlike traditional video courses that can often feel tedious, this app incorporates a Security IQ system that rewards users for their interactions. Users earn points for mastering the fundamentals, utilizing the library, and staying updated with the latest cybersecurity news. As users engage more, their Security IQ increases. However, it also presents a challenge: inactivity can lead to a decrease in IQ, encouraging regular engagement.

Moreover, users are awarded coins that can be used to personalize their experience within the app. Whether it’s customizing the app icon or selecting unique notification titles, these features add a layer of personalization that enhances user satisfaction.

Quality Content Backed by Research

Creating reliable educational content in cybersecurity is no small feat. To ensure the accuracy and relevance of information, I referenced the Digitalführerschein (DiFü), an initiative supported by the German government. This foundational content was further evaluated and approved by my academic supervisor, providing a robust framework for users to learn from.

I invite you all to explore SecureMind and take part in this educational journey. Your feedback and support are invaluable as I continue my research in this vital field.
