I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Education

Hello, esteemed readers,

I am excited to share an innovative project that I have developed during my master’s thesis: SecureMind, an iOS application designed to teach the essentials of cybersecurity in a user-friendly and engaging format. Inspired by the successful educational model of Duolingo, this app is aimed at making cybersecurity knowledge accessible to everyone.

The Concept Behind SecureMind

As part of my research into mobile microlearning, I sought to explore how bite-sized learning experiences could motivate individuals to enhance their understanding of cybersecurity. SecureMind addresses this need by providing a structured yet flexible learning environment. Users who opt to share their usage data voluntarily will help me evaluate the app’s effectiveness and gain insights into user interaction with its features.

How SecureMind Works

The app is thoughtfully designed with various chapters focused on different aspects of cybersecurity fundamentals. Each chapter begins with an assessment of the user’s existing knowledge, followed by a comprehensive review once all sections are completed, enabling users to track their learning progression effectively. Each section contains concise information snippets paired with quizzes to reinforce understanding.

To promote long-term retention of learned material, SecureMind unlocks a library of previously covered topics after the completion of the first chapter, which expands with each subsequent chapter mastered. Additionally, the app features periodic updates with trending cybersecurity news, keeping users informed of the latest developments in the field.

Engagement Through Gamification

Distancing itself from tedious video courses, SecureMind embraces gamification to enhance the learning experience. Two key elements drive engagement:

  1. The Security IQ System – Users earn points for achieving learning milestones, utilizing the library, and staying updated with cybersecurity news. Active participation is rewarded, but users must also keep engaged to maintain their Security IQ, which diminishes over time with inactivity.

  2. Customization Options – Users also collect coins that can be used to personalize their app experience, including customizing app icons and modifying notification titles.

To ensure that the content is both relevant and accurate, I utilized the DiFü (Digitaler Führerschein) framework, which is supported by the German government. My supervisor reviewed all material to maintain high standards of cybersecurity education.

I encourage everyone to download SecureMind from the App Store and embark on this learning journey. Your feedback and support not only aid my research but also contribute to a more informed public regarding cybersecurity practices.
