I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A New Mobile App for Learning Cybersecurity

Greetings, readers!

I am excited to share my latest project—an iOS application named SecureMind that aims to empower individuals with essential cybersecurity knowledge. Developed as part of my master’s thesis, this app draws inspiration from Duolingo’s effective learning model, emphasizing the importance of microlearning in enhancing cybersecurity awareness among the general populace.

What is SecureMind?

SecureMind is designed to break down complex cybersecurity concepts into manageable chapters and sections. At the beginning of each chapter, users undergo a preliminary assessment to evaluate their existing knowledge. After completing all sections, a follow-up evaluation helps users track their progress and improvements, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.

Each section includes succinct information followed by a quiz that tests comprehension, making the learning process efficient and effective. To foster long-term retention of acquired knowledge, users unlock a personal library after finishing the first chapter. This library expands with each additional chapter completed, allowing learners to revisit and solidify their understanding of previously covered material.

Engaging Learning through Gamification

Understanding the need for engaging content, I have integrated two primary gamification features into the app. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for their activities, such as learning, utilizing the library, and keeping up with the latest cybersecurity news. As users remain active, their Security IQ rises; however, inactivity leads to a decrease, encouraging consistent engagement. Furthermore, users can earn coins that can be used to customize their app experience, like changing the app icon or setting unique titles for notifications.

In developing this content, I took inspiration from the DiFü (Digital Führerschein) initiative, which is backed by the German government. The material provided in the app has been thoroughly reviewed by my academic supervisor to ensure accuracy and relevance.
