I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Education

Greetings, dear readers!

I’m excited to share that I have developed an innovative iOS application called SecureMind as part of my master’s thesis project. This app is designed to teach fundamental concepts of cybersecurity to the general public, taking inspiration from the engaging, user-friendly learning methods popularized by platforms like Duolingo. My research focuses on how mobile microlearning can enhance motivation and knowledge acquisition in cybersecurity.

About SecureMind

SecureMind provides an intuitive interface where users can explore various aspects of cybersecurity through a series of organized chapters and sections. Each learning module begins with an assessment of the user’s existing knowledge and concludes with a quiz, offering a clear view of progress and improvement over time. This structure ensures that users not only consume information but also actively engage with it.

Once users complete the first chapter, they gain access to a growing library of previously learned material, reinforcing retention as they advance through additional chapters. In addition to structured lessons, the app regularly features brief updates on cybersecurity news, keeping users informed about the latest developments in the field.

Engagement Through Gamification

Understanding that traditional learning methods can often be dull, I have incorporated two key gamification elements to make the learning experience more enjoyable. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for engaging in lessons, utilizing the library, and reading news articles. Users who maintain an active learning streak can watch their IQ soar, but inactivity can lead to a decrease, which adds a layer of motivation to return to the app daily. Additionally, users earn coins that can be spent on customizing their app experience, such as adjusting the app icon and creating personalized notification titles.

To ensure that the content of SecureMind is both accurate and effective, I based it on the DiFü, a digital competency framework supported by the German government. This foundational material was further refined through input from my academic supervisor.

I invite you to explore SecureMind and join me in the mission to enhance cybersecurity literacy. Feel free to download the app and share it with friends and family—your feedback and support are invaluable to my research!

You can download SecureMind on the App Store here: Download SecureMind.

Thank you for your support, and I hope you enjoy your learning journey with SecureMind!
