I developed a Duolingo-inspired cybersecurity teaching app as part of my master’s thesis

Introducing SecureMind: A New Way to Learn Cybersecurity

Hello, readers!

I am excited to share my latest project with you—a unique iOS application named SecureMind designed to teach the fundamentals of cybersecurity to a broad audience. Inspired by the engaging learning techniques of Duolingo, this app is a significant part of my master’s thesis, which investigates the effectiveness of mobile microlearning to encourage individuals to enhance their cybersecurity skills.

SecureMind offers a structured approach to learning, featuring chapters and sections that cover essential cybersecurity topics. At the start of each chapter, users undergo a brief assessment to evaluate their existing knowledge, with a follow-up test after they complete the content. This setup allows users to track their progress and see tangible improvements over time.

The app is designed for longevity in learning. After finishing the first chapter, users unlock a comprehensive library of previously covered topics, which expands as they advance through additional chapters. This archive serves as a powerful tool for revisiting earlier information, reinforcing retention and understanding. Occasionally, users can also catch up on the latest cybersecurity news, keeping them informed of current trends and threats.

In an effort to make learning as engaging as possible—moving away from the traditional and often dull video course format—I have incorporated two key gamification elements. The Security IQ system rewards users with points as they engage with the material, utilize the library, and stay updated with security news. This system not only incentivizes active learning but also poses a challenge: users must remain active to maintain and elevate their IQ scores. Additionally, users earn coins that can be used for customization options within the app, such as altering the app icon or creating personalized notification titles.

Recognizing that offering clear and effective security guidance can be complex, I have drawn on the reputable DiFĂĽ (DigitalfĂĽhrerschein), a framework supported by the German government, to create the app’s foundational content. My supervisor has also helped review the material to ensure its accuracy and relevance.

I invite you to explore SecureMind and share it with your friends and family—your support is vital to my research and development efforts!

Thank you for your interest, and here’s to making cybersecurity education accessible for everyone!
