I got hacked by the classic “Test my game” scam, how to procceed?

Navigating the Aftermath of a Hacking Incident: A Personal Account and Steps Taken

In today’s digital landscape, cybersecurity remains a pressing concern for many. Recently, I found myself embroiled in a disconcerting situation involving a hacking attempt, which served as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance online. Here, I share my experience and the measures I’ve taken to counteract the effects of the incident.

The Setup: Falling for a Familiar Trap

Out of the blue, two long-established Discord accounts I recognized reached out to me. Despite our history, I mistakenly let my guard down when they prompted me to download a so-called “game” for testing purposes. In hindsight, this decision was regrettable. Once I executed the file, I was soon contacted by a third Discord account that claimed to have gained access to my Google account, accompanied by a screenshot for proof.

Swift Actions: Containing the Damage

Fortunately, I had a spare notebook on hand. I quickly disconnected my main computer from the internet and began the process of logging out of all devices linked to my Google and Discord accounts. To bolster my security, I promptly reset my passwords across the board—especially important since many of my passwords were saved on Google. Additionally, I enabled two-factor authentication wherever possible, adding an extra layer of protection.

My first line of defense involved performing a clean installation of Windows 11. While this action wiped the drive where the operating system is installed, I was still concerned about any residual threats. I ran a full scan with Windows Defender and planned to install additional security Software, including Avast and Malwarebytes, to perform comprehensive scans. As a precaution, I kept my PC offline during this process.

Seeking Professional Help

If anyone is interested in assessing the malware I inadvertently downloaded, it can be found at oblivora.com. However, I urge caution—this is not something to take lightly.

Contemplating Further Measures

While I would prefer not to perform a complete wipe of my other drives, I recognize the potential need for additional action. I’m in search of recommendations for reliable tools that could facilitate a thorough wipe, should that be necessary.

Reflection: Assessing My Response

Looking back, I wonder if I took all the appropriate steps to mitigate damage and secure my accounts. It’s a sobering reminder that even seasoned internet users can fall prey to hacking schemes, underscoring the need for constant vigilance and preparedness in our digital interactions.
